Aleurites moluccana - Candlenut / Indian Walnut

A rainforest tree, native to North QLD, China, Taiwan, the Indian Sub-Continent and SW Asia, which grows 10+m tall with blackish to grey brown bark and a spreading crown of large leaves and masses of small white flowers.  These are then followed by many brown, round fruits which contain a very nutritious nut, this is delicious roasted but note that it should never be eaten raw as the toxin in the oil can induce nausea and vomiting.  This is a prolific seeder and can become weedy.

Callistemon linearifolius syn Melaleuca linearifolia - Netted Bottlebrush

A shrub growing 3 to 4m in height with linear to linear-lanceolate leaves to 10cm long and 7mm wide with an acute apex.  The inflorescences are red spikes to 10cm long and 5cm in diameter and appear in Spring to Summer, these are then followed by the seed capsules.  These are found growing in dry sclerophyll forest on the NSW coast and adjacent ranges, occurring mainly from the Georges River to the Hawkesbury River.

Jacaranda mimosifolia - Jacaranda

A South American native which has become naturalised and iconic in warmer areas of eastern Australia, it has also been distributed to southern Africa, Hawaii, SE USA and other parts of South America.  It is a deciduous or evergreen tree with an open habit, branches that are reaching upwards and foliage if a soft green colour which turns yellow in Winter before falling from the tree and grows to 15m tall which has masses of tubular, lavender flowers in late Spring to Summer.  The seedpods that follow flowering are a round, flat, reddish-brown woody capsule and contain many small winged seeds.  This is a beautiful ornamental tree, often used in large open spaces like parks and large gardens.  It provides lovely filtered shade and is tolerant of drought and wet weather.
