Common Name: Red Cedar
Grows in the subtropical forests of New South Wales and Queensland. Can grow to 60 m with a 3 m diameter trunk. One of Australia’s few deciduous trees, the leaves fall in autumn and grow back in early spring, new leaves are red. Small white/pale pink flowers appear late spring. Timber is red, easy to work and highly valued for furniture, panelling and ship building. An interesting structural planting for large gardens and parks. Seeds can take up to 12 months to germinate. Seed germinated trees tend to have stronger root systems than cutting propagated plants.

Native to coastal freshwater wetlands of northern and eastern Australia. A rhizomatous sedge with tall, slender glaucous foliage 1.5 to 3 m high. Used for ornamental water feature plantings, boggy areas, ponds and pots with 50cm depth. Prefers full to sun to half shade. The leaves are used for weaving and basket making.

Prefers full sun and well-drained soils. An ornamental palm for gardens and street plantings, also good as an indoor plant.

Native to rainforests of north east Queensland. In natural habitat it can grow to 30 m but in cultivation to 10 m. Creamy-white fragrant flowers appear August to December, prolific in tropical climates but slower in temperate regions. Flowers and foliage are used in floral arrangements, the leaves have a green upper with a bronze underside. Prefers compost rich acidic soil with good drainage in sunny to light shade positions. An attractive garden plant or street tree for bees, nectar birds, butterflies.

Native to eastern Australia, a medium to large rainforest tree that grows to 40 m in its natural environment although smaller in cultivation and in cooler climates of southern states. Flowers are circular red umbels appearing February to March. A popular ornamental garden tree in Australia and around the world. Suitable as street trees and for large parks and gardens. Prefers sun to part shade and grows best in rich loamy soils. Attracts bees, butterflies, insects and nectar-feeding birds.
