Ravenala madagascariensis – Travellers Palm

This stunning tropical plant has very large banana like leaves – 3m long and 30-50cm wide – which are held in a fan shape on a green palm-like trunk, 30cm in diameter which displays distinctive trunk leaf scar rings.

Young plants have a subterranean trunk and once mature it emerges above the ground to elevate the crown to its full height.  It grows 7-15m tall, prefers full sun when established but can also tolerate some shade. 

Ravenala madagascariensis produces many small white flowers held in green canoe shaped bracts.  These bracts turn brown and are filled with beautiful bright blue seeds.
