Common Name: Beach Hibiscus, Coastal Cottonwood
A common coastal plant in east and north Australia as well as Oceania, Maldives and south-east Asia. Grows 4 to 10 m high with a spreading, dense canopy of heart shaped leaves making an excellent shade tree. Flowers are yellow with a deep red centre when open, during the day the flowers change to orange and then red before they fall. Tolerates salt and waterlogging. Timber is used for firewood, wood carving and furniture. Ornamental garden and park tree and popular as a bonsai specimen.
